No Fireworks for RBNY on July 4th

With the 4-0 loss at Houston Dynamo this past Wednesday on July 3rd, the Red Bulls continue an unlucky record when playing games on (or close to) the nation’s Independence Day.

The franchise has an overall record of 6-14-4 since 1996 when playing on the Fourth. A couple of things to note with this record. In 2011, the team played a game two days before and after the Fourth so those were taken into account. The year after, the team had the holiday off from playing, suiting back up four days later to resume league play.

Out of 24 league games, only two have been played at home in franchise history to celebrate the country’s birth – the last one being in 2011 when they drilled five into the net against Toronto. The remaining 22 have all been played away from home, with most of those being on the west coast.

And one city, in particular, loves to host the Red Bulls on Independence Day – the Colorado Rapids – where they’ve played each other five times. The Rapids have scored 10 goals while New York has only two; the first from Tab Ramos back in ’96 and the other from Juan Pablo Angel in ’10.

For his year’s foe, the Dynamo, it was not the first time they have shut out RBNY by a scoreline of 4-0, doing so once before in 2007 as well. Both teams have now played each other three times on July 4th with New York allowing a whopping 10 goals and only being able to score twice. Those coming in the same match from Bradley Wright-Phillips back in 2014.

Overall, the Red Bulls have a -19 goal differential on this holiday, scoring 30 times and allowing 49.

Guess the Bulls just don’t like fireworks.
